Our Terroirs

Dahlenheim is situated in the wine-growing area on the Saverne group of faults, the widest and most varied of Alsace's vineyards. The soil is predominantly clay and limestone, covering different types of substrates: hard limestone or calcareous conglomerate.
Thus, the wines we create boast all the richness of wines produced on clayey soil and the elegant acid structure of those produced on limestone soil.

The Grand Cru Engelberg of Dahlenheim :

The reputation of the wines of Engelberg stretches back over one thousand years. From 884 the Benedictine monks in the Abbaye de Honau - built by the brother of Saint Odile, the Duke Adalbert - spoke of "Nobilis vinis" from this terroir, evoking, for the first time in Alsace, the nobility of the crus which would establish the fame of their wine-growing properties throughout the region. Later, it was the Fondation Saint Thomas (1229) and the Hospices of Strasbourg (1320) which emphasized the quality of wines from "angels' hill". It is also worth mentioning the Cathedral Chapter, whose spiritual power usurped the region's entire material wealth.

The Grand Cru Engelberg occupies the southern slope of Scharrach hill, between 250m and 300m above sea-level. It consists of two sections, separated by a quarry, which produced lime until the mid 20th century. Our plots are situated on the eastern section of the Grand Cru: the marly-limestone soil is shallow and gravelly, with gravelly sands, over a parent rock of cracked hard limestone. The Rieslings and Gewurztraminers produced from this terroir offer remarkable complexity and balance: the refinement from the limestone working in harmony with the structure and acidity offered by the marl.

The Silberberg of Dahlenheim :

2.jpg With a long-established reputation for producing high quality crus, the Silberberg can be found on the slopes of Dahlenheim, as you leave the village. Here, the hill formed by the calcareous conglomerate from the Oligocene period features pebbly brown calcareous soil, predominantly clay and limestone. The soils situated on the high part of the hillside are gravelly and vary in depth, allowing us to plant various different grape varieties. We grow three of the Alsatian vineyard’s noble grapes on this terroir, recognised for its quality: Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.
